CORRECT WAY TO MEASURE FOR A BRIDLE
Key Measurements
#1 Crownpiece (Bit-to-Bit): Measure from one corner of the horse's mouth, up along the cheek, over the poll (behind the ears), and down to the other corner of the mouth.
#2 Browband: Measure from the back edge of one ear, across the forehead, to the back edge of the other ear. The browband should be long enough to allow for a slight gap in front of the forehead.
#3 Noseband Circumference: Measure around the muzzle, approximately one to two inches (or two fingers) below the prominent cheekbones. Ensure this is loose enough to fit two fingers between the tape and the nose.
#4 Throatlatch: Measure from the back of one ear, down under the throat, to the back of the other ear.
Cheek Pieces (Optional): Measure from the corner of the mouth to the level of the eye to determine the necessary length.
Tips for Accurate Fitting
-
Check the Browband: A well-fitting browband sits roughly 0.5 to 1 inch below the ears.
-
Check the Noseband: The noseband should be positioned about two fingers' width below the cheekbone to avoid rubbing.
-
Throatlatch Clearance: You should be able to fit a clenched fist between the throatlatch and the horse’s jaw.
-
Bit Position: When fitting, the cheekpieces should be adjusted so the bit creates two soft wrinkles at the corners of the mouth.
-
Bridge the Gap: If your horse is between sizes (e.g., Cob and Full), it is often better to select the larger size to avoid pinching or to buy individual parts in different sizes.
Standard Bridle Sizes
-
Pony: Suitable for small ponies.
-
Arab or Cob: Suited for ponies, Arabians, and smaller-headed horses.
-
Full (Horse): Standard size for average horses.
-
Extra Full (Warmblood/Oversize): For larger horses or those with thicker heads.
